Connecting with students is the joy of ministry for both Pr. Erika and Pr. Jena, and finding the touchpoints has transformed over the years. As anyone in congregational life knows, mostly gone are the days when visitors just stop by to check out worship. So too, with campus ministry, the touchpoints are changing. Even direct emails don't always reach students, so this fall, campus ministry is transforming the way we reach students.
Every Tuesday morning from 8-11 Pr. Jena meets students where they are: out and about at local coffee shops and breakfast places. Hannah and Josie, two Lutheran Campus Ministry students, were excited to meet with Pr. Erika at different spots on campus, where Pr. Erika was able to buy them each an afternoon pick-me-up as well. They both expressed excitement about the new ways that LCM is showing up on campus, and for the emerging possibilities in partnership and touchpoints.
In September alone, touchpoints with several new students were established, and thanks to generous donors, over $200 in gift cards were able to help support this new method of meeting students. While the methods might not look the same, the end result of creating connection, community, and engaging faith remain the core mission of LCM.

Connie came to Iowa State University in 1970 from a small, rural town in Iowa. Growing up, Connie had been actively involved in her Lutheran congregation, so it was a natural fit to try out LCM. "The friends and fellowship I found there became my wonderful, dependable church ‘home,’" says Connie, and "continuing to have a Lutheran church home has been a priority in my adult life."
What Connie didn't know in those early years, however, was that her adult life would be spent in Oregon.
One day after an event at Lutheran Campus Ministry, Connie was invited to the Pastor's home. "I remember seeing this coffee table picutre book," Connie reminisced, "and I thought I needed to live there." And that's excactly what she did.
After graduating from Iowa State in 1973, Connie moved to Oregon, inspired by the beautiful photography, and has thrived there ever since. Looking back on her time with LCM, Connie says, "It reminded me that there’s a faithful welcoming family of God wherever you go to be the dependable anchor of life teaching the same gospel I was raised with."
